Economic Impact Stimulus Payments & Scams

Check and mobile friend
Starting March 12th, the IRS began distributing the third round of federal stimulus funds as part of the Economic Impact Payments/COVID-19 relief efforts.

You don’t need to do anything to receive your payment from the government. As long as you filed taxes for 2018 and/or 2019, the federal government likely has the information it needs to send you your money via direct deposit or paper check.

Tips about your payment
  1. To see if you are eligible to receive an Economic Impact Payment and to check your status, visit the Economic Impact Payment Information Center by clicking here.
  1. There are three ways to check your Kinecta account to see if your direct deposit has arrived*.
    • Log into online banking
    • Log into our secure mobile banking app
    • Call Kinecta at 800.854.9846, Option 1
  1. If you receive a paper check from the IRS, we encourage you to deposit it via remote deposit from your mobile banking app or stop by a Kinecta ATM or convenient branch during normal business hours.
*Please note the deposit date and amount are determined by the IRS - not Kinecta - and we cannot release deposits sooner than the IRS allows. The payment will appear in your account summary as “IRS TREAS 310 XXTAXEIP2” or something similar. If you don’t have online banking yet, enroll today.

Protect yourself from scams
  1. You do not have to sign up to receive your money. Do not give out your personal information, Social Security number, PayPal account, or bank information to anyone. Also, watch for email phishing scams where scammers pretend to be from the government and ask for your information as part of the “sign-up” process for the checks.

  2. If you didn’t provide the IRS with your bank information on your 2018 or 2019 return and you wish to have it direct deposited, you will need to contact them directly to set up direct deposit. Visit irs.gov/coronavirus for more information.

  3. No one has early access to this money. Anyone that claims to have this access is a scammer. Do not provide your personal information to anyone who makes such claims.

  4. For official updates and more information, visit the IRS at irs.gov/coronavirus. And if you come across a scammer trying to take your check report it immediately to ftc.gov/complaint.

  5. Additional Paycheck Protection Program funding became available through the SBA to Kinecta in late January. For small businesses, there is no fee to apply for a federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan. If you receive a call from anyone offering to fill out loan application, grant application, or loan forgiveness application - for an upfront fee or a percentage of the PPP funds – it is likely a scam. Additionally, there is no fee charged by California to apply for the state’s California Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grant Program.
