Fraudulent Emails Appearing to be from the FDIC

This is an alert that fraudulent emails are being sent to consumers that have the appearance of being from the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation).

A sample of the fraudulent email reads as follows:

The email subject line reads “you need to check your Bank Deposit Insurance Coverage”.

The body of the email states, "You have received this message because you are a holder of a FDIC-insured bank account. Recently FDIC has officially named the bank you have opened your account with as a failed bank, thus, taking control of its assets."

The email then instructs the recipient to click a link that reads, “You need to visit the official FDIC website and perform the following steps to check your Deposit Insurance Coverage."

Warnings / TIPS:

  • This email is an attempt to gain consumers personal account information or to load a harmful virus to their computer
  • You should never click a link on an email from an unknown source
  • The FDIC does not issue un-solicited emails to consumers
