ATM Security

Practicing good ATM security is important for protecting your money and your personal information. Here are some ways you can protect yourself when using ATMs.

ATM Skimming

ATM skimming is a type of fraud that involves an illegally installed device, called a “skimmer,” over the slot where you insert your card. These card readers grab data off a credit or debit card's magnetic stripe. The stolen information is used to create fake cards which can be used to make unauthorized purchases and withdrawals.

Protect Yourself from Skimming

  • Watch for signs that the ATM may have been altered or tampered with. Does the ATM have parts that look crooked, misplaced or damaged?
  • Avoid standalone or unusual-looking ATMs; choose one in well-lit areas like lobbies or stores.
  • Be observant of your surroundings. Have your card ready and stand directly in front of the ATM. Leave once your transaction is complete.
  • Stop the transaction and notify the ATM owner if something seems suspicious with an ATM's keyboard or card slot.
  • Shield the keypad with your hand as you enter your PIN and be aware of anyone standing too close.

Protect Your Cards

  • Always keep your debit and credit cards in safe places; no one should have access to your card, except you.
  • Keep your PIN a secret. Do not write it down anywhere, especially on your card.
  • Never give any information about your card or PIN to someone over the phone.
