Check Fraud Scams

Scammers use sophisticated software, commercial laser printers and scanners, and blank check stock to produce counterfeit checks. Scammers offer quick cash by instructing you to deposit a check into your own account and send a portion of the check to someone else, saying you can keep the rest as your payment. However, the check will bounce and your account may be overdrawn for hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

Be warned: the financial institution does not assume the losses in this case. You are responsible for the funds you deposit and withdraw from your account.

Protect Yourself from Counterfeit Checks

  • Pause and think. A legitimate person or business will not send you a check and ask you to send cash in return.
  • Fake checks take weeks to discover. Just because the funds have been released into your account does not guarantee that the check is legitimate.
  • Know who you are doing business with. Never transfer or wire money to someone you do not know, have never met in person or do not have a verified business arrangement with.
  • Consult with your local branch office. Credit union representatives can assist you in determining whether the check item is legitimate.
