Tech Support Scams

Tech support scams are fraudulent attempts to trick people into paying for unnecessary technical support services. Scammers may pose as computer technicians from well-known companies, like Microsoft or Apple.

You may receive a phone call, pop-up or email telling you that there is a problem with your computer. Their aim is to steal your money, personal information or gain access to your personal files.

The scammers will ask you to give them remote access to your computer — which lets them access all the information stored on it.

How to Avoid a Tech Support Scam

  • Legitimate tech companies won’t contact you by phone, email or text message to tell you there’s a problem with your computer.
  • Security pop-up warnings from real tech companies will never ask you to call a phone number or click on a link.
  • Check out our Computer and Email Safety tips to learn more about keeping your computer safe.
